Introducing Richard
Richard is an assistant surveyor with our affordable housing business Living Space.
Personal Statement
I started my working life as a solicitor in conveyancing but after a while realised that it wasn’t the career for me. I decided to change direction by taking a degree in quantity surveying. I joined Wates three years ago on a part time basis while I was doing my degree full time and then moved to working full time for the company and continued my studies on day release. Right from the start I was given responsibility and the training and support I have had here, has been great.
My Week
I work for Living Space, Wates affordable housing business. I am currently working on the Stratford High Street project in East London where I am responsible for most of the internal packages – i.e. drylining, carpentry, internal finishes etc. At the start of the job this involved procuring and analysing pricing and then financially managing the sub-contractors. I also meet with the client’s Quantity Surveyor to manage their cost expectations. Managing these relationships is really important as it’s not all about money but working together and adding value. It can sometimes be difficult to get the right balance but it’s really rewarding when we reach our targets and get the right result for everybody.
