In summer 2023, we welcomed three Leonard Cheshire Change 100 interns into the business, providing them with the opportunity to learn first hand from mentors and seasoned professionals in the construction industry.
At Wates, we recognise the importance of searching for talent from a diverse range of backgrounds, and the Leonard Cheshire Change 100 scheme presented the perfect opportunity to engage with a demographic that is often underrepresented within the industry.
Sam Hughes was one of the interns who joined Wates during the summer of 2023. The Leonard Cheshire Trust takes into consideration each intern's skills, experience, and interests, striving to match them with businesses that align well. Initially surprised to be matched with construction – an industry he had not previously considered – Sam quickly demonstrated an aptitude for learning and seamlessly integrated into the pre-construction team. His independent project, which involved creating a case study database for future bids, impressed staff and will remain a valuable resource for the business for years to come.
Reflecting on his internship, Sam highlighted the level of responsibility he was given and how the hands-on nature of the tasks provided him with a comprehensive onboarding experience and an insightful look into the business and industry. This exposure made him seriously consider a future in construction. Shortly after his internship concluded, applications for the competitive Wates trainee scheme opened. Encouraged by his positive experience and the support of the team, Sam decided to apply.
Sam was successfully accepted into the trainee scheme after passing the rigorous assessment process. With thousands of individuals applying, he stood out due to his dedication and enthusiasm for the built environment industry and his commitment to Wates. Sam rejoined the pre-construction team permanently, starting as a trainee. His hard work and progression will see him through the promotion gateway at the end of the trainee management scheme, where he is set to become an assistant bid manager.
Sam's success story demonstrates the value of investing in young talent through initiatives like The Leonard Cheshire Change 100 Internships. Wates Construction remains committed to providing meaningful opportunities that inspire individuals to explore careers in the built environment. The company looks forward to welcoming more ambitious individuals who, like Sam, can grow and thrive in a supportive and innovative environment.
“Wates were flexible and supportive throughout. They recommended various reasonable adjustments, including adjusted work patterns, and created an open culture where I could voice my needs. This was crucial to developing the confidence that I could manage my health in the workplace and recognises that meaningful inclusion is about day-to-day culture and not just policy (‘actions speak louder than words’).”
