Commercial Director – Construction London

Reporting to: Regional Managing Director (direct)

 

Our Construction London is seeking a Commercial Director to provide strategic commercial leadership across the business.  This is a senior leadership role, accountable for delivering the regional commercial strategy, ensuring strong governance, effective risk management and sustainable profitability across projects and portfolios.

 

The Role

As Commercial Director, you will sit on the regional construction board and take collective responsibility for delivering both regional business objectives and national Construction Group standards. You will lead and influence commercial performance across the region, ensuring early engagement with projects, appropriate resourcing, and robust commercial controls from work winning through to delivery and completion.

 

Key Accountabilities

 

Lead the regional commercial contribution to Zero Harm and exemplary health, safety, wellbeing and environmental performance

Act as a member of the regional construction board, contributing to strategic and operational decision‑making

Work with the Regional Managing Director to shape and deliver the regional business plan

Own the identification and management of short, medium and long‑term commercial risks, ensuring effective mitigation strategies are in place

Provide functional leadership to regional commercial teams, ensuring effective people, capability and succession planning

Oversee collaboration between Commercial and Pre‑construction teams to support effective work‑winning and bid strategies

Ensure commercial, procurement, financial and legal requirements are appropriately resourced and delivered across projects

Monitor performance across multiple projects, adjusting priorities and resources where required

Intervene to resolve commercial or contractual issues, including disputes, to achieve satisfactory regional outcomes

Act as custodian of Wates governance processes, ensuring compliance with group policies and standards

Contribute at a national level to the ongoing development and modernisation of commercial policies and practices

 

 

About You

 

Significant experience operating at a strategic commercial level within construction

Strong background in contract negotiation, risk management and bid leadership

Sound understanding of procurement policies and commercial governance

Educated to degree level in a commercial or related discipline, or equivalent experience

Ideally RICS qualified (or similar)

Able to influence and communicate effectively at senior levels, internally and externally

Resilient, commercially astute, and confident managing complexity and competing priorities
