Wates Construction is delivering a major new-build Category B prison adjacent to the existing HMP Gartree site in Leicestershire.
 
The £800m+ development will provide over 1,700 prison places, alongside educational workshops, 26 classrooms, and extensive rehabilitation-focused facilities—representing one of the UK's key new justice-sector infrastructure schemes. 

The role: 

We are seeking an experienced and highly organised Document Controller to join the Wates project team at HMP Gartree. You will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth flow, accuracy, and governance of all project documentation on this high-profile scheme.

What you'll be doing: 

  • Manage the flow of documentation using Wates' document control systems.
  • Ensure all project documents are checked, reviewed, approved, and stored in accordance with Wates protocols.
  • Maintain version control and ensure all stakeholders are working to the latest information.
  • Support site teams, design managers, commercial teams, and supply chain partners with document-related queries.
  • Produce document status reports and trackers for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with project governance, including MoJ and security-related requirements.
  • Assist in audits, quality checks, and handover documentation preparation (O&M, H&S files).
  • Champion good information management practices across the project team.

What you will bring: 

  • Previous experience as a Document Controller on large construction projects.
  • Strong understanding of document management systems and common data environments.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to support a multidisciplinary project team.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, compliance‑driven environment.
  • A proactive, collaborative attitude in line with Wates' values.
