The role
We are looking for a talented Project Surveyor to join Wates Construction, playing a key role in ensuring the successful commercial delivery of our projects. You will take ownership of pre‑ and post‑contract activities, manage costs and support project teams to meet contractual, financial and operational objectives.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys accountability, thrives on collaboration and is driven to deliver high‑quality commercial outcomes.
What you'll be doing
As a Project Surveyor, you will:
- Lead and support project team performance, ensuring contractual obligations and commercial strategies are met and regularly reviewed
- Complete and submit Business Unit and Group commercial reports
- Contribute to tender strategies and demonstrate a strong understanding of project needs
- Build and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants and wider stakeholders
- Support the Commercial Manager in agreeing and producing main and subcontract final accounts
- Oversee all subcontract management activities, including procurement, measurement and valuation, contractual instructions and Health & Safety compliance
- Prepare tender and contract documents, including bills of quantities
- Carry out risk, value management and cost control throughout the construction lifecycle
- Identify and manage commercial risks, ensuring appropriate mitigation strategies are in place
- Value completed works, certify payments and monitor cash flow
- Engage collaboratively with project teams to maximise procurement, production and financial performance
- Promote and support SHEQ standards, including reviewing subcontractor safety audits and ensuring full compliance with Wates policies
- You may also provide guidance and direction to Site Surveyors, Assistant Surveyors and Trainee Surveyors.
What you'll bring
Knowledge & Experience
- Strong understanding of construction methods, technologies and valuation
- Knowledge of subcontract procurement and management
- Solid awareness of contractual frameworks, claims and Wates' commercial processes
Qualifications
- MRICS or MCIOB (or working towards) – Preferred but not mandatory.
Skills
- Excellent relationship‑building skills across clients, consultants, design teams and supply chain
- Strong commercial acumen with the ability to maximise value recovery, manage cost and optimise cash flow
- Confident in financial reporting and final account processes
- Effective leadership skills with the ability to develop site‑based commercial teams
- Skilled in producing accurate reports for a range of stakeholders
