Meet James Edgar, Site Manager for Wates, on the AESC UK gigafactory project.

The construction of the AESC UK gigafactory is one of the most significant projects in the North East, driving forward the UK’s commitment to sustainable energy and electric vehicle production.

At the heart of this complex and high-profile project is a dedicated team, ensuring that everything runs smoothly, safely, and efficiently. One key player in this effort is one of the Site Managers for Wates, overseeing day-to-day operations and keeping the project on track.

A Day in the Life of a Site Manager

As Site Manager at AESC UK, my primary responsibility is to oversee the construction sites daily activities, ensuring that progress aligns with safety regulations, quality standards, and project deadlines. Each day presents new challenges, requiring a hands-on approach and constant communication with various stakeholders.

A typical day includes:

Given the scale and importance of this project, my role requires strong leadership, risk management, and collaboration to ensure we stay on course.

From Apprentice to Site Manager: My journey into construction

Unlike many in the industry, I didn’t come from a traditional construction background. Instead, I started as a Construction Management Apprentice with Wates Construction, where I gained hands-on experience in project management, site operations, and health and safety.

What drew me to construction was the tangible impact of the work — being able to see projects come to life from the ground up. The fast-paced, dynamic nature of the industry appealed to me, and I was particularly motivated by the opportunity to work on large-scale projects like the AESC UK gigafactory, which contribute to sustainability and infrastructure development.

Coming from a different background has given me a fresh perspective on problem-solving and site management. The industry has been incredibly rewarding, offering endless opportunities for growth and innovation.

Overcoming challenges as a Site Manager

Every large-scale project comes with its share of challenges, and the AESC UK gigafactory is no exception. Some of the biggest hurdles include:

Managing tight schedules and deadlines

With strict timelines in place, delays can have significant knock-on effects. I focus on detailed planning, clear co-ordination, and regular progress meetings to keep everything moving efficiently.

Ensuring safety and compliance

With over 1,700 people on-site at peak times, maintaining safety is a top priority. My role involves promoting a strong safety culture and ensuring strict adherence to protocols.

Balancing multiple stakeholders

The project involves various parties, including AESC UK, subcontractors, and suppliers. Clear, consistent communication and regular site meetings help keep everyone aligned.

Maintaining high-quality standards

Fast-paced construction requires rigorous quality control and bespoke trade quality plans. I work closely with engineers and sub-contractors to ensure every stage meets design specifications before moving forward. This includes onsite inspections and designated checkpoints to inspect and approve installations, ensuring compliance with project specifications and manufacturer warranty requirements.

Each challenge presents an opportunity to refine processes and enhance leadership skills, making every project a continuous learning experience.

Driving innovation in construction

The construction industry is evolving rapidly with new technologies and sustainability goals. I’ve embraced digital tools to streamline processes and enhance efficiency. From planning tools and quality management software to BIM and cloud scanning for real-time mapping, technology plays a crucial role in improving construction workflows and reducing project timescales.

Sustainability is also a key focus. The AESC UK gigafactory aligns with the UK’s transition to net-zero carbon emissions, and as Site Manager, I ensure that we implement environmentally responsible construction methods wherever possible.

Advice for aspiring Site Managers

For those considering a career in construction, particularly in site management, my biggest piece of advice is to take the leap. You don’t need prior knowledge — everything can be learned along the way. The industry offers diverse opportunities, and site management is especially rewarding as you get to see projects come to life, solve challenges daily, and contribute to meaningful developments in the built environment.

Being able to say you were part of a project that provides homes, workplaces, or services for people is incredibly satisfying. If you’re eager to work in a fast-paced and impactful industry, the built environment is a great place to be.

Beyond the site: A passion for travel and sports

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is working with people from all over the world. The AESC UK project brings together multinational teams, offering invaluable exposure to different cultures and ways of working.

Outside of work, I love travelling and experiencing different cities. As a huge sports fan, I also enjoy following Newcastle United around Europe whenever I get the chance.

Final thoughts

The AESC UK gigafactory project is a landmark development, contributing to the UK’s green energy revolution.

“As a Site Manager, I take great pride in being part of such an impactful initiative. Construction is more than just building — it’s about problem-solving, teamwork, and creating a lasting legacy.

“I’m excited to see how the industry continues to evolve and look forward to tackling the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead!”
