If you’re exploring your next step or wondering where an apprenticeship could lead, Kelly’s journey offers a glimpse of what’s possible.

Tell us about your career journey so far. Where did it all begin?

I actually started my career straight after school in hairdressing and stayed in that industry for around 18 years. It was all I’d ever known, and I really enjoyed working in the salon, but over time I realised I wanted something different – a career with progression, stability and better work–life balance, especially after having my daughter.

I’d never worked in an office before, outside of working in a salon, so making the change felt daunting at first.

What made you consider an apprenticeship and a career in construction?

I didn’t originally see the built environment as an option for me, as my perception of roles in this industry was quite narrow. But after doing some research, I realised how many different career paths there are within the built environment. An apprenticeship felt like the perfect route because it allowed me to earn, learn and build new skills at the same time, without needing to go back into full‑time education.

How did you find the apprenticeship experience at WPS?

My apprenticeship was a Level 3 business administration role within the social value team. No two days were the same. I supported community projects, worked with supply chains, helped organise events, attended meetings and spent time in schools and local communities. I also had a dedicated study day each week, which really helped me balance work and learning. The support I received from my manager and the wider team made a huge difference.

What skills did you develop along the way?

I gained organisation and prioritisation skills, especially as I travelled to different locations and juggled multiple tasks. I also gained confidence – from speaking in meetings to engaging with people in the community. One unexpected part of my journey was being diagnosed with dyslexia later in life. Initially, that was scary, but the support I received helped me overcome it and build confidence in my abilities. It showed me how inclusive and supportive the culture really is.

What are you doing now, having completed your apprenticeship?

After finishing my apprenticeship, I was offered a permanent role as an assistant social value advisor at WPS. I now manage my own activities, attend client meetings independently and help deliver projects that make a real difference to communities. I feel trusted and supported, and I can genuinely see a long-term career path ahead of me.

What do you typically do in your role as an Assistant Social Value Advisor?

I plan and deliver social value activities, organise and attend community events, and meet with clients to report on progress and explore new opportunities. I work closely with supply chain partners, support local initiatives and help ensure each project leaves a lasting, meaningful legacy. I also play an active role in shaping the social value outcomes we deliver.

What do you enjoy most about working at WPS?

The people, without a doubt. Everyone is friendly, supportive and willing to help; no question ever feels like a silly one. I also find my role really fulfilling. Being able to support communities and help others who may feel unsure about their career path is incredibly rewarding.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

Go for it. Be open‑minded, ask questions and don’t be afraid to start something new – no matter your age or background. Apprenticeships are such a valuable way to build skills, confidence and a career you can really be proud of.
