We transformed the Sir Michael Uren building at Imperial College London (ICL) over an 11-week programme, installing a new restaurant and mezzanine level. The building sits at the heart of the ICL campus and is used by thousands of students.
Catering was not previously available at the building, with students having to leave the site at lunch and break times. The new restaurant means ICL students have the convenience of having all they need within one building and can relax on campus in between lectures and other educational activities.
We completed a shell and core strip out of a redundant space within the building to make way for the new restaurant, installing a new mezzanine level with a welcoming open-plan design and modern exposed services.
The new restaurant provides hot and cold food to students and staff, with ample seating for all to relax in, in between timetabled sessions. Not only does the restaurant provide added value for members of the university community, it also offers ICL the opportunity to generate additional income through renting the venue out to external companies.
The £1.45m project was undertaken during term time, with lectures and other educational activities taking place according to the regular timetable. We worked tirelessly to minimise disruption to students, mitigating any possible distractions with a carefully planned programme of activity.
We worked directly next to the reception area, meaning our team needed to consider students, staff and university visitors. Managing fire and security risk was also a high priority for the duration of the project, with thorough assessments taking place at each stage of the programme, ensuring the greatest level of safety for all on campus.
Using our trusted supply chain, we kept to the strict project budget while delivering a project with long-term benefits. Drawing on our experience of fit-outs in the education sector, we were able to accommodate this without compromising on the standard of service provided to the customer.
We partnered with the social enterprise Recycling Lives for this project, resulting in nearly 12 tonnes of waste being saved from going into landfill. We were also able to generate energy from waste produced during the project.
